Edmonton Social Planning Council
The Edmonton Social Planning Council (ESPC) is an independent, non-profit, charitable organization. Their focus is on social research – particularly in the areas of low income and poverty. They work to encourage the adoption of equitable social policy, support the work of other organizations who are striving to improve the lives of Edmontonians, and educate the public regarding the social issues that impact them on a daily basis.
- The ESPC published a document in 2005 calling for a determinants of health framework as the basis of a new health strategy. Creating Social and Health Equity: Adopting an Alberta Social Determinants of Health Framework explored similar strategies in jurisdictions around the world. The author argues that “[the] adoption of this framework would represent an important shift in emphasis from an illness based health care system (characterized by a focus on acute care) to a wellness-based system that focuses on preventing illness and chronic disease by addressing the social determinants of health” (pg. 1).
