Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) is the national Inuit organization in Canada, representing four Inuit regions – Nunatsiavut (Labrador), Nunavik (northern Quebec), Nunavut, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region in the Northwest Territories.

  • In 2007, ITK prepared a draft discussion paper, Social Determinants of Inuit Health in Canada that considers determinants of health and health equity through the historical and cultural lens of the Inuit people. The paper includes chapters on income, housing, education, food security, health care, social safety nets, early life, addictions, environment, and self-determination and states that, “Self-determination improves health outcomes since communities who control their resources and services can initiate programs that match their needs, reducing delivery gaps and creating valuable support networks for vulnerable groups” (p. 21).
