Rural Development Institute, Brandon University
Brandon University’s Rural Development Institute (RDI) is a centre for excellence in rural development, helping to strengthen rural and northern communities through research and information on issues unique to these areas.
- The Brandon University RDI conducted the Determinants of Health of Rural Populations and Communities project, an interdisciplinary multi-year research project funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to engage students directly in field research. The goals of the project were to examine the determinants of health and adapt community health indicators to rural settings, as well as developing and evaluating a framework, process and tools to assess health. Between 1995 and 2005 the project developed the tools in two communities and further tested them in a third, more northern, community.
