Learning Together: Living health equity values in public health organizations: A review and dialogue-based tool

This 2021 brief from the NCCDH summarizes research and practice evidence for public health organizations to identify and apply organizational values to support health equity action. It is best used alongside the NCCDH’s Let’s Talk: Values and health equity, which introduces the concept of a value and broadly discusses values that support health equity.


Part of the Organizational Capacity for Health Equity Action Initiative

The brief integrates a review of the literature, as well as the expertise of research and practice experts through a learning circle process as part of the Organizational Capacity for Health Equity Action Initiative (OCI).

Other key components include definitions of values that support health equity, examples of related action and a discussion of the opportunities and challenges related to operationalizing health equity values at an organizational level.


Values-to-action tool

The resource culminates with a highly practical values-to-action tool. This tool is designed transform values into meaningful change efforts support leaders and staff to increase the alignment between stated organizational values and health equity action.

  • support dialogue to increase alignment between organizational values and health equity action; and
  • articulate your organization’s core health equity values and identify opportunities to operationalize such values into action.
