Community organizing: A community power-building approach to advancing health equity

In this webinar, NCCDH and an organizer from Migrante Manitoba will deepen public health practitioners’ understanding of community organizing as a public health intervention by defining community organizing, describing community organizing practices as well as the benefits of public health engaging with organizers, and providing case studies (focused on precarious work and immigration) of public health both partnering with organizers and using organizing methods to advance equity.

Measuring what counts: Equity prompts for public health preparedness and resilience

As the spread and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated in Canada and the world, we find ourselves in a cycle of planning, response and recovery. The National Collaborating Centres for Infectious Diseases and Determinants of Health (NCCID and NCCDH, respectively) have responded by reviewing lessons learned and recommendations on health equity from past pandemics in Canada.

This story outlines how Cool Aid community organization and their partners responded to support people made vulnerable by their housing situation in Victoria, British Columbia during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Equity, community, collaboration, and holistic care were centered. Principles and practices to support improved relationships between community, primary care and public health are highlighted.
