Incorporating Equity into Community Planning: A Visual Quickstart for Local Governments

This resource is available in English only.  

This visual resource from PlanH complements the organization’s Supporting Equity in Planning and Policy Action Guide, both of which are designed to aid local governments implement and champion equity in social, economic, environmental, and cultural domains. This visual quickstart aims to prompt local governments to get started in applying an equity lens.

Key points are to:  

  • Consider past and present inequities in the community’s vision for an equitable future, including the community context and the community vision, guiding principles and goals
  • Include policy goals related to social need, well-being and development: economic and employment participation; service provision; social, culture and spiritual participation; food and agriculture; and parks and recreation
  • Leverage land use policies to support equitable service provision, including land use, urban design, housing, and transportation

Use this resource to:  

  • Learn how to apply an equity lens to local government process
  • Introduce others to the application of an equity lens using a visual guide
  • Incorporate equity into community planning
