L’expérience citoyenne au service de la prévention. Cadre de référence et outils de mise en œuvre pour une participation efficace de la population

This resource is available in French only.

Citizens play a key role in preventing health problems. In order for citizens to participate effectively in prevention activities, we must find ways to incorporate their lived experience, or experiential knowledge.

Lebel and Dufour’s L’expérience citoyenne au service de la prévention (Citizen experience in the service of prevention) (2020) outlines the key elements for active public participation in the prevention of health problems. The resource also offers tools and strategies to facilitate citizen engagement in a rigorous way. This includes explanations of different types of citizen engagement, as well as conditions for successful participation.

The framework is intended to help local public health leaders and practitioners to emphasize the importance of experiential knowledge in improving public health interventions. It is also meant to encourage ethical reflection to support the integration of citizen experiential knowledge with scientific and professional knowledge. The resource itself is composed of scientific, professional and citizen experiential knowledge.

Use this resource to:

  • engage citizens in preventing health problems;
  • mobilize the necessary resources (both quality and quantity) to plan for and to support citizen engagement; and
  • develop organizational leadership that values engaging citizens in preventing health problems.
