Promoting Health of Older Adults Part 3: Community engagement for equity and healthy aging

This webinar is part of a series co-developed by the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health (NCCDH) and Health Promotion Canada (HPC) based on content from the book entitled “Promoting the Health of Older Adults: the Canadian Experience” (PHOA).
This third webinar in the series will explore the opportunities and challenges for strengthening community action that promotes health and equity for older Canadians. Speakers will discuss research efforts and policy and program developments to support the health of older adults, with attention to age-friendly programs and environments as a way to promote the health and quality of life of older adults. Health issues for immigrant and 2SLGTBQ+ older adults will be highlighted.
Participants will learn about:
- Why community engagement is an important strategy for addressing health equity and the social determinants of health for older adults
- Principles of engagement for older adults to inform priorities and decisions in public and community health
- Dispelling myths about older adults’ involvement in and contributions to community
- Issues and initiatives to strengthen community participation by older adults in communities that face challenges related to discrimination and a lack of resources, such as older people in new immigrant and 2SLGTBQ+ communities.
This webinar will be of interest to practitioners, educators, policymakers, academics, researchers and organizations working in aging.
It will also benefit advocates for older persons in health promotion, public health, gerontology and community development, as well as in related fields such as nursing and social work.
