Course overview
The Black Health Primer is an online course developed by the Black Health Education Collaborative (BHEC) — a pan-Canadian initiative focused on improving the health of Black people and communities across Canada. It was developed in response to gaps in medical and public health education and training on Black health and anti-Black racism in Canada. Informed by critical race theory, the self-paced course explains how anti-Black racism impacts health and discusses how to address the health inequities experienced by Black people and communities in Canada.
Modules
The course uses various learning methods, including case studies and multimedia content, to support participants to understand anti-Black racism and implement racially just solutions and action. Delivered over eight modules, topics include the legacy of slavery in Canada, anti-Black racism as a structural determinant of health, and ways to address anti-Black racism in health systems and organizations. For example, Module 6 supports learners to identify interventions, policies and accountability measures to dismantle anti-Black racism in health systems.
Learning outcomes
By the end the course, learners should expect to have a deepened understanding of how anti-Black racism impacts health inequities in Canada and strengthened capacity to address and dismantle anti-Black racism in individual practice and at organizational levels.
Audience
The course is designed and suitable for all health professionals and educators.
