Changes in the socioeconomic situation of Canada’s Black population, 2001 to 2016
Cette ressource est également disponible en français.
This study published by Statistics Canada presents disaggregated data and information on Canada’s Black population.
Study focus
Drawing on census data from 2001, 2006 and 2016, as well the 2011 National Household Survey, this study presents the diversity of socioeconomic conditions experienced within Canada’s Black population. It makes comparisons to the rest of Canada’s working-age population by sex, generational status and place of origin.
The study explored three main questions:
- How has the demographic and socioeconomic situation changed for Canada’s Black population, in comparison to other Canadian populations, between 2001 and 2016?
- What different trends can be seen between the subgroups within Canada’s Black population?
- What connections can be drawn between the current situation of Black adults (education and labour market) and past childhood situations (family and socioeconomic conditions)?
The study concluded that Black Canadians experience multiple challenges related to employment, income and poverty.
