Des nôtres : une analyse des besoins des personnes LGBTQ2S d’expression française du Manitoba

This resource is available in French only.

Intersectional issues affecting health and complete development

French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in a minority language context, encounter intersectional issues particularly in relation to language and to sexual identity or gender. In addition, they are at greater risk of suffering discrimination and stigmatization: homophobia and systemically heteronormative environments. Immersive discrimination and stigmatization can contribute to minority stress and social health inequities, resulting in the deterioration of the individual’s well-being.

Social supports and health supports needed

This report, which analyses the needs of French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ individuals (the “Community”), is a first study of gender in the Canadian West carried out by the LGBTQ+ Collective of Manitoba.

Using a quantitative approach: an online survey of 80 members of the French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ community, the study shows:

  • The lack of active community service offerings and health care offerings for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in the French language;

  • A significant gap around French language psychological support;

  • Double discrimination based on sexual orientation and French language capacity.

Practical approaches to promote health

The needs study analysis has allowed formulation of the following recommendations:

  • Continue the needs analysis of under-represented social groups within the French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ population, taking into consideration minors, the elderly, indigenous individuals and racialized individuals.

  • Support the fullest community and interpersonal development of French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ community members.

  • Improve access to French-language social and healthcare services in a safe and inclusive environment for all 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.

The report brings out the complexity of the needs of French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ individuals living in a minority language context. With a view to promoting health in a minority language context, the report proposes that these needs be taken into consideration in public health practice, in a progressive and ongoing manner.

Use this resource to

  • Facilitate dialogue about access to health care by French-speaking 2SLGBTQ+ individuals in a minority language context

  • Conduct a needs assessment of community members in the contexts of vulnerability and of minority language living

  • Promote access to healthcare in an inclusive and safe environment for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals

Alignment with NCCDH work:

The NCCDH supports the public health community to consider the specific needs of safety, inclusivity and equity of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, particularly those living in a minority language context.

To do this, it is vital that public health organizations understand the intersectional issues encountered by French-speaking 2SLGBTQI+ individuals living in a minority language context.

Accordingly, the NCCDH has published the following resources to support the health of 2SLGBTQI+ individuals, intersectionality, and approaches for responding to stigmatization and discrimination.
